Are you a victim of sexual harassment?

Generally, sex or gender based discrimination involves an employer treating someone differently and/or unfavorably because of that person's sex. Such practices are prohibited by law however, as various federal and state statutes (including Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964), make it unlawful for an employer to discriminate against an individual based on their sex. This prohibition against sex-based discrimination encompasses most aspects employment, including decisions relating to hiring and firing, pay, job assignments, promotions, layoffs, training, fringe benefits, and almost any other term or condition of employment. Sexual Harassment is one of the most common forms of sex or gender based discrimination in the workplace.

While not an all-inclusive list, some of the most common grounds for a claim of Sexual Harassment include: Repeated sexual advances; Tying promotions to sexual favors or dating; Sexually explicit emails, memos, or jokes; Unwanted touching of any type; Persistent uncomfortable comments about dress or personal appearance; and/orDiffering treatment due to gender. It is important to note however, that such harassment does not have to be sexual in nature, as it can also include non-sexual acts such as making offensive remarks about a person's sex in general. For example, it is illegal to harass a woman by repeatedly making offensive comments about women in the workplace.

Just as the grounds for sexual harassment can come in many forms, so can the alleged harasser. That is to say, the alleged harasser can be anyone from victim's supervisor to a supervisor in another department, or even a co-worker, or someone who isn't an employee of the employer at all, such as a client or customer.
